The Heights Primary will be a new, mainstream primary school for the Caversham Heights / Mapledurham area. The school will take children from reception through to Year 6. It will have two classes per year, with a maximum of 25 children per class.

The Heights Primary will open in September 2014 with two reception classes. The school will then grow organically with two new reception classes joining each year, reaching full capacity of 350 children in 2020.If there is sufficient demand in 2014, the opening year will also include one class each of Years 1 and 3. It was felt that transferring children into these years would have minimal impact on their education and these were the years where parents were most keen to transfer children into.

At The Heights Primary we will aim to deliver a curriculum that will inspire and motivate; one that will provide challenge with a strong emphasis on creativity, whilst aiming to instil a lifelong love for learning in our pupils.

In the Reception year, The Heights Primary will follow the Statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage. All learning experiences will involve activities focusing on the following seven areas of learning:

  • Communication and language
  • Physical development
  • Personal, social and emotional development
  • Literacy
  • Mathematics, science and technology
  • Understanding the world
  • Expressive arts and design

We will then follow the National Curriculum in Key Stages 1 and 2 with core subjects of Literacy and Numeracy being delivered daily, predominantly in the morning. The other core subjects of ICT and Science will focus on practical teaching and learning of key essential skills. The non-core subjects will be delivered through an exciting Creative Curriculum, where different themes or topics provide a focus for teaching and learning for a period of weeks.

A strong emphasis on cross curricular links will enable children to transfer their learning in the core subjects to the Creative Curriculum. We believe this approach embraces the values of our school and can successfully engage pupils by making learning real and enabling them to truly ASPIRE.
